SEO Search Engine Optimization
In this post I’m going to share some of my SEO secrets. Anyone with a website should know the basics of SEO, which is how to drive traffic to your website.
I’ve recently spent a lot of time learning Search Engine Optimization and implementing what I learned on my website. My hard work is starting to pay off as today I saw on Google Analytics that Organic Search traffic was ranked #1 on my website.
Having 9 unique visitors to my site on a day may not seem a lot to some of you, but for my website that’s only been active for a couple months I’m pretty happy with the results. What’s even more interesting is that the visitors came from 9 different cities from 3 countries (United States, Canada, and Russia)!
I spend 2 hours each day 5 days a week listening to podcasts on how to improve my website and SEO. That’s 10 hours of education a week, not including additional time I spend educating myself through Udemy.com and YouTube tutorial videos.
I like the quote that says,
Here, my goal is to build my website and implement SEO techniques to drive more traffic to my website & blog. Sharpening my axe refers to me educating myself through podcasts, webpage articles, YouTube videos, and Udemy.com online courses.
Secret #1: Use Yoast SEO plugin
This WordPress plugin is simply amazing. It tells me how to improve my blog posts so that they are optimized for SEO.
Some of my blog posts are ranking high enough in the search results on Google and Bing that when people search, my blog is showing up on the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). From Google Analytics I can see that organic search on Google brought 3 visitors to my site, and Bing organic search brought 1 visitor to my site. Facebook brought 1 visitor, Twitter brought 1 visitor, and I also got 1 referral from another website.
Secret #2: Optimize each page on your website for SEO
I use Yoast SEO plugin to optimize the pages on my website. I’ve done it for some pages, but there are still a lot of improvements to be made. As I improve my website, I expect my page rankings on Google and Bing will improve.
Secret #3: Use social media to share your content
When I publish a new blog post, I share it on social media. I find that Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest, and other sites create traffic to my website. This also helps my SEO on my website.
I’ve done some experiments with social media and had some great results. I’ll share about how I used Twitter to increase my exposure in a future post.
Secret #4: Use keywords, keywords, keywords!
The best way to optimize your website is to use keywords, so that when people search those keywords in a search engine, your site will show up on the Search Engine Results Page. I can write a whole post on this later.
Secret #5: Use Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3
This is one of the easiest way to tell Google or Bing what your keywords are. I use these headings in my blog posts.
