Starting your own blog
I wrote this article in response to a reader’s comment on my previous blog post “America’s Got Talent: Viral Videos of My Favorite TV Show”:
Have you ever thought about starting your own blog? How do you start a blog? I will provide some guidance in this article.
How I got started with blogging
You can easily start a blog.
In 2004, I was introduced by a friend to Xanga.com, which was a blogging site. I immediately fell in love with blogging. I was excited I could start my own blog. I wrote about my own experiences about things I was learning at that time, as well as life experiences. I quickly found that I love to share knowledge. I love to share my experiences.
A few years later I found out about WordPress. I created a WordPress .com blog “http://calvinklee2010.wordpress.com” and started posting blog articles. It was fun and easy to setup. No coding experience is required. I could simply click on “write new post”, write about my random ramblings, click “post”, and then my blog article will be live on the Internet for my readers to enjoy. That WordPress.com blog is still functional, but now I have moved to my new official blog “www.hellocalvinlee.com/blog”.
I could easily share my WordPress .com blog article on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media.
For WordPress.com blog:
Easy to use and set up
No coding experience required
Cannot set up an e-mail subscription list
To start blogging today, go to www.wordpress.com.
The need for more functions: starting my own website
Website for my self-published books
In late 2015 I found out about self-publishing books on Amazon (see my books here: www.amazon.com/author/hellocalvinlee). After I published 10 books, I decided to make my own website. I got to a point that WordPress.com did not have the functionality I needed. I wanted to build an e-mail list. The free WordPress.com blog did not allow me to build an e-mail list without upgrading to the premium version for $400-500. I did not want to pay that much money.
Then I found out about web hosting and creating my own website domain “www.hellocalvinlee.com”. I chose to use Blue Host (www.bluehost.com) as my web hosting and used WordPress as my content management system (CMS) (www.wordpress.org).
Note: WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different things! WordPress.com is the free, limited functionality blog version. WordPress.org is the fully featured version that many big companies websites use, such as
The New Yorker
New York Times, and so on.

Web hosting and domain name registration costs need less than $10.00 a month.
With my own website, I have the flexibility to customize my website and blog that the free WordPress.com blog didn’t have. I could add a lot of plugins such as social media sharing buttons, showing related posts at the end of each block article, customize my logo, add e-mail subscription capabilities for my readers, and so much more.
